Regenesis: Promoting sustainable agriculture among Mauritian farmers
In Mauritius, where agriculture plays a key role in both the economy and the landscape, agroecology offers a practical response to environmental challenges. It helps farmers adapt to local conditions while supporting the long-term development of the sector. Through Regenesis, ER Group promotes agroecological practices that support more resilient agricultural systems adapted to the Mauritian context. The programme supports the biodiversity pillar of ER Group’s Climate Resilience strategy, which forms part of the Group’s Sustainability framework.
Regenesis was awarded the Fonds Business-Biodiversité Océan Indien grant and is part of the Varuna Programme, led by Expertise France and funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). One of the strategic pillars of the programme is its field-based initiatives. In collaboration with the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture (MCA), ER Group is supporting farmers across the island in adopting sustainable agricultural practices and contributing to the development of healthier agricultural landscapes.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to equipping farmers with the knowledge, tools and support needed to address the challenges of climate change.
“The Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture supports farmers in their transition from conventional to more sustainable agriculture through its Smart Agriculture project. Phase 1, launched in 2015, began with a survey that highlighted concerns around pesticide use. In phase 2, a reduction in the use of chemical products was observed. Today, with ER Group’s involvement in Phase 3, we are focused on sharing and strengthening the learnings gained from the previous phases with a larger group of farmers,” explains Mishtee Sumboo, Assistant Project Coordinator at MCA.
Alignment with ER Group’s Sustainability Framework
Through the Regenesis programme, ER Group is contributing to the regeneration of biodiversity and promoting the transition towards agroecology. The initiative supports the biodiversity pillar of the Group’s Sustainability Framework and help shape a more resilient, fertile, and sustainable agricultural future for Mauritius.
