La Réserve Golf Links: Redefining golf and sustainability
La Réserve Golf Links: Redefining golf and sustainability in Mauritius
In December 2023, La Réserve Golf Links opened its fairways in Bel Ombre, not just as a new championship course, but as a symbol of what responsible development can achieve. Set within a region recognised as a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, it is the only golf course in the Indian Ocean to be awarded the prestigious GEO Certified® Development status.
This milestone reflects ER Group’s commitment to regenerate land, restore ecosystems, and reimagine what sustainable leisure can look like, not in theory, but in practice.
As part of Heritage Golf Club, La Réserve Golf Links offers sweeping ocean views from every hole. Paired with Le Château Golf Course, it creates a 45-hole destination, the first of its kind in the region, positioning the south of Mauritius as a rising hub for world-class golf and sustainable tourism.
A responsible approach to development
La Réserve Golf Links was awarded GEO Certified® Development status during its earliest stages, a global endorsement of its ecologically and socially conscious approach. What was once a sugar cane plantation has been carefully restored into a playable, living landscape. Native grasses have been reintroduced. Water features invite local wildlife. The layout works with, not against, the topography of Bel Ombre.
This development is rooted in responsibility. Every phase, from planning to construction and beyond, was guided by the GEO Sustainable Golf Development Standard. That meant using locally sourced materials, favouring low-impact building methods, and designing with long-term resilience in mind. Resources were managed carefully, and the course’s environmental footprint was minimised at every step.
Co-designed by South African Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and renowned architect Peter Matkovich, La Réserve offers a true links-style experience, open to the elements, framed by ocean horizons, and routed through natural elevation to deliver both strategic complexity and a strong sense of place. The result is a course that not only plays beautifully, but belongs to the land, to the community, and to a more sustainable future. It’s a reflection of ER Group’s belief that purpose and performance go hand in hand and that the best kind of progress is the kind that lasts.
