The circular economy could generate up to 9,000 jobs and represent nearly 3% of GDP in Mauritius. That potential is real, and for the past six months, the government and Business Mauritius have been working together to make it happen, translating the national roadmap 2023–2033 into measurable actions.
In the latest edition of Business Magazine, our CEO, Philippe Espitalier-Noël, also President of the Sustainability and Inclusive Growth Commission at Business Mauritius, reflects on what has been achieved so far and the priorities still ahead.
Five sectoral platforms are being structured. The first, focused on the construction sector, will serve as a hub for training, industrial synergies, and outlets for recycled materials, with evaluation committees set to monitor progress through to 2029. In parallel, 2026 is expected to mark a milestone with the validation of the Plastic-Free Roadmap, an operational framework to reduce single-use plastic pollution in Mauritius.
As Philippe frames it: "Without this clarity, it becomes difficult to change practices, to plan, to secure investments, and to organise the transition under the right conditions."
